My Car Key Fob Stopped Working — What's Wrong?
Five things to try before you assume the key fob is dead — plus when to call an automotive locksmith.
Why did my car key fob stop working?
Try these in order before calling anyone:
1. Replace the coin battery (CR2032 in most fobs). 80% of 'dead' fobs are just dead batteries. A fresh battery costs $3 at any drug store in Harrisburg, NC.
2. Stand within 3 feet of the door handle and try again — weak battery signals fade fast with distance.
3. Press and hold the unlock button for 5+ seconds. Some vehicles need a long press after a battery change to re-sync.
4. Try the spare fob if you have one. If the spare works, the original needs reprogramming or replacement.
5. Use the hidden mechanical key inside the fob to unlock the driver door manually — almost every fob has one.
If none of that works, an automotive locksmith can reprogram or replace the fob on-site — no dealer trip.
