Are Smart Locks Actually Safe?
A working locksmith's honest take on smart lock security, the real risks, and how to install them properly.
Are smart locks safe?
Yes — when installed correctly. Major brands (Schlage Encode, Yale Assure, Kwikset Halo, August) meet the same ANSI/BHMA grades as their mechanical cousins, plus they encrypt Wi-Fi/Bluetooth traffic.
The weak point is almost never the electronics. It's the door, strike plate, and screws. A smart lock screwed into a hollow door jamb with stock 1/2-inch screws gets kicked open just like any other lock. A locksmith fixes that with a reinforced strike plate and 3-inch screws into the stud.
Use a long PIN (6+ digits), enable auto-lock, and disable the 'one-touch lock outside' feature on rentals. Done right, smart locks are at least as safe as a quality deadbolt — and a lot more convenient.
